What Is A Residential Care Home?

Residential Care Homes or Personal Care Homes provide supervision with all activities of daily living while maintaining a small home environment. They provide a living arrangement in which housing, meals, help with activities of daily living and protective supervision are provided for individuals who cannot live independently, but do not need typical institutional care. They provide a family-like atmosphere for many older persons who, because of physical or mental impairments, can no longer live alone, but can continue to exercise a fair degree of independence in a home-like setting with some assistance and oversight. It has also been proven that many younger adults with mental or physical disabilities can also live successfully in residential care homes rather than nursing homes or mental institutions.

Typical Services Provided

Care and supervision is delivered on a 24-hour, continuous schedule. Each residential care home offers individualized services according to need and preference. However, a typical summary of services is reflected below:

Home cooked meals (3 daily) + snacks
Special diets and feeding assistance, if needed
Housekeeping
Laundry and linen service
Bathing, grooming and dressing assistance
Hair and skin care
Activities and outings
Medications management

Licensure

Each facility is surveyed for Life Safety standards, as well as, health, operational and management concerns. Two types of licenses are available through the Texas Department of Human Services for homes with 4 or more residents - Type A and Type B. Homes with 3 or less residents are not required to be licensed.

Type A: Routinely accommodates residents who are ambulatory and are able to self-evacuate in the event of fire or who can evacuate the building in 13 minutes or less with minimal assistance. The resident must be able to walk using a cane, or walker, if necessary, or may use a wheelchair if able to transfer themselves and propel themselves throughout the home.

Type B: Accommodates the resident who may need assistance transferring to a wheelchair and needs other assistance such as feeding, or a higher staff ratio. Type B facilities must incorporate overhead sprinkler systems and may enroll residents who are bedridden or wheelchair bound and requires assistance to evacuate.

Method of Payment

Services are typically available on a privately paid basis with some variation on pricing. There are a few Medicaid facilities; however, like Assisted Living and Independent Living facilities, most are private pay. We recommend that you call your choice of facilities to discuss individual program offerings and pricing. Accommodations are available on a private and semi-private room basis.
